Known as the Great Dane; one of the best high-stakes players in the world
THE LINEUP
Hellmuth is a poker purist who’s won more bracelets than anyone. To him the game isn’t about something as trivial as dragging chips. It’s about executing flawless strategy. So when his fellow pros dove headlong into $100K coin flips, a game as random as the lottery, he stayed true to his beliefs and stayed on the sidelines. But all the while he looked like a kid who doesn’t know how to swim watching friends whoop it up in the deep end of the pool. And when you aren’t having fun you start resenting the ones who are. And Durrr was having a ton of it. He won the forth coin flip and about every other pot. Hellmuth’s sole pursuit became trapping the young pro and teaching him a lesson. But with such narrow focus he lost sight of the bigger game and wound up losing $100K ($200K if you count Negreanu’s book). In the end he borrowed money from Dwan so he could stay afloat. He’s a player with a big poker IQ, but Hellmuth forgot that it’s smart to do something stupid once in a while.
