Finished second at the WPT's inaugural Ladies' Night event
As a teenager growing up in her Toronto neighborhood, Evelyn Ng was known as a sweet kid who was taller than a lot of boys on her street. In the local pool halls though, the 14-year-old was known as a wicked pool hustler.
Hanging out in pool halls might not be everyone's idea of a young lady's ideal environment, but Evelyn's skill was obvious to everyone who walked in the door. One of those people was another teen pool shark, Daniel Negreanu. The two became close friends. And when Daniel started making it big in poker, he convinced Evelyn to give it a try.
After graduating from high school, Evelyn moved to Las Vegas. Initially she worked as a blackjack and poker dealer. The position gave her a great vantage to learn from other players' mistakes, and most importantly, she picked up every tell at her table.
In 2003, Evelyn entered a satellite for a seat into the WPT's inaugural Ladies Night event. She won her seat and joined five of the biggest names in the game, including Jennifer Harman, Clonie Gowen, Annie Duke, and Kathy Liebert. Evelyn played very aggressively, raising and re-raising throughout the tournament, and ended up in second place. It was a huge accomplishment considering the field she was up against, and it gave her the confidence to hang up her dealer uniform and go pro.
The "Queen of the WPT" has since established herself not only at WPT tournaments, but also at poker tables around the world. She's made many final table appearances and her cashes place her in the top third of the women's all-time money list.
Evelyn's ambition is to become the first woman to win the WSOP Main Event, so she keeps to a rigid playing schedule. But it's not the case of, "all work and no play make Evelyn a dull girl." She loves to immerse herself with everything having to do with pop culture: music, books, TV, games, newspapers and magazines. She even finds time to pick up spare change playing pool.
