Mr. Self Control

David Gray is the ultimate by-the-books, level-headed player

Like many other players, David didn't set out to become a poker professional. Growing up on New York's Long Island, he spent a lot of time going to the race track and, in fact, earned his living as a horse handicapper for many years. During down times between races, David played poker to pass the time and soon became proficient in Seven-Card Stud.

In 1984, David packed his bags for Las Vegas. He knew he could always stop into any nearby Sports Book and place a bet on the ponies, but with so much poker action nearby, the game quickly became his primary profession. Although Seven-Card Stud was David's first love, he soon branched out and learned other forms of the game, including Hold 'em, Omaha, and Razz. Before long, his skills at these games improved and soon, Johnny Chan, Barry Greenstein and David became some of the youngest players to regularly play in the "Big Game."

While David is now generally considered to be one of the top cash-game players in the world, he also enjoys playing tournaments.

He does not, however, enjoy traveling for the privilege and rarely - if ever - enters a tournament outside of Las Vegas. With so much poker outside his front door, David doesn't see any reason to uproot his life for the tournament circuit.

Throughout his illustrious career, David has made five World Series of Poker final tables, and has won bracelets in the $2,500 buy-in Seven-Card Stud tournament in 1999 and the No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw tournament in 2005.

When he's not at a poker table, David can often be found indulging his passion for sports. He loves nothing more than watching a good ball game or hitting the links for a round of golf.
